Necton – Companhia Portuguesa de Culturas Marinhas, S.A.

The mission of Necton is to exploit innovative products resulting from scientific knowledge in Marine Technologies.

The company is involved in the large scale production of traditional salt and flower of the ocean, both certified by Nature & Progrés and obtained the 2000 Slow Food award. Necton’s Traditional Sea Salt is a totally natural unprocessed product. The natural and ancient method of crystallizing Sea Salt gives the product a bouquet of trace elements that is lacking in normal sea salt, retaining almost all of the sea water minerals.

Necton is also specialized in the production and processing of microalgae for the extraction of valuable compounds.

Necton has collaboration activities with several universities, research organizations and companies working with marine technologies.

The company is located in a 23 ha salt marsh, between the cities of Faro and Olhão in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, South of Portugal.

The mission of IST is to contribute to the development of society by providing high quality Education in the areas of Engineering, Science and Technology. Research and Development at Instituto Superior Técnico is carried out essentially in Research Institutes, Centres and Groups, which integrate teachers and researchers linked to the several departments of IST. The faculty, researchers, and graduate students of the Mechanical Engineering Department are active, being presently involved in more than 100 international research projects. These projects cover all range of Mechanical Engineering subjects, as well as some in Aerospace and Environment areas.

SATIVA is recognised as a certification body to several schemes: • Organic Farming; • Integrated Crop Management (ICP); • Integrated Pest Management (IPM); • EUREPGAP Protocol; •Good Agriculture Practices (GAP); • Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP); • Protected Designation of Origin (PDO); • Protected Geographical Indication (PGI); • Meat and poultry labelling schemes; • Egg labelling schemes.

SATIVA is also working as an inspection body for Nature et Progrés – Sel.

SATIVA is beginning the work with other Nature et Progrés Schemes and has also started negotiations to work as an Inspection Body for BRC – British Retail Consortium. Besides inspection and certification, SATIVA cooperate with training activities such as farmers training actions, agricultural technicians training actions and University Post-graduation and Master of Science programs.

SATIVA has a Consulting Board of Certification where all the intervenient in the schemes’ product chains are represented. Under these schemes SATIVA deals with a variety of crops, livestock and products such as fruits and vegetables, cereals, rice, olives, herbs, meat, poultry, eggs, honey, salt, animal feed, flowers, olive oil and wine.
