What is Life Cycle Assessment?

LCA is based on the concept that the total environmental impact of a given activity or product occurs during its whole life cycle. However, it is often useful to understand where the highest ecological liabilities arise. Therefore, a distinction is made between direct and indirect emissions

Direct emissions are those that occur in direct relation to the entity that is responsible for the product or activity. Indirect emissions are true life cycle impacts, since they occur before and after production.

In an LCA of any product, direct and indirect effects are always calculated, and may be presented separately. The separation is useful, since it is easier for a company to act on its direct emissions than on the indirect ones.
