During the course of the ECOSALT project, an Environmental Sustainability Standard was developed. This Standard sets guidelines and targets for traditional solar salt production. It was defined according to the best practices and techniques available, and its final goal is the minimization of all environmental impacts during the production process.

The implementation of ECOSALTís Environmental Sustainability Standard is required for the use of the eco-label in salt products. Even thought the Standard was developed according to Nectonís expertise and IST scientific methodologies, it was devised as a tool that may be used by other companies that wish to use the correspondent eco-label.

As in any Sustainability Standard, there are three steps for a company to adopt the ECOSALT Standard.

The first one is the implementation of all requirements.

The second one is the verification of their accomplishment by a third part. After this process, any company may then report their environmental performance with the ECOSALT eco-label.

The third and final step is the maintenance of a control system that ensures that the Standard is always applied. Periodic verification is required. If the company fails to assure the compliance with the Standard at any time, then it cannot use the eco-label anymore.
